Much better. You just need kernel-package, libncurses5-dev and
fakeroot from the Debian sarge archives then do:
Untar the kernel tarball.
cd into the extracted source.
make mrproper
make menuconfig
fakeroot make-kpkg clean
fakeroot make-kpkg binary
That's it. You now have a kernel-image-*.deb package (plus
source+doc+headers packages)
Tip: if you use the package kernel-package from www.backports.org
you'll have a linux-image-*.deb which conforms to debian policy naming
conventions for kernel 2.6.12 and up.
Hope that helps.
