Friends, I want only to share to you my experienced in choosing a better Linux distribution for my company laptop.
The purpose is: - Avoiding to buy another MS Windows XP (license). We already spent a lot of money for our computers to buy Windows XP license (not pirated) and MS Office (not pirated too). - I can use it to provide dial-up and DSL technical support and use the Internet for instant messaging and web surfing at home and in the office. The laptop specifications: - Neo brand - 512 Mb memory - 1.3 Ghz CPU I chose rightnow is the SimplyMEPIS 6.0 version, because it met my purpose or goal. The LAN or ethernet adapter is working properly when providing technical support to our DSL clients. Also the built-in modem was easily detected upon installing the operating system. I can use the dial-up easier by using KDE ppp program. Here are the distributions I tried before but my goal was not successful: - Ubuntu Breezy Badger - the LAN or network adapter was malfunctioning when troubleshooting client DSL modems. The display adapter was difficult to reconfigure to the best setting. - Mandriva Limited Edition 2006 - the LAN or network adapter also was malfunctioning when troubleshooting client DSL modems. Imagine while I was working to troubleshoot to the customer premises and suddenly the network adapter of my laptop was not working. :( - Xandros open circulation edition (OCE) - Linspire old version (free download) May be the newest version of Xandros and Linspire will also support the hardware of this laptop. I thank MEPIS because their program is free to download and I can use it so far properly. So in my experienced and opinion Linux is keeping improving that's why I think rightnow it can support this laptop I'm using even it is only a generic brand or not well known brandname or cheap one.:D. Also I think the hardware support is again is the issue why most computer users is avoiding Linux. It lacks still driver and hardware support. I need your comments and opinions or experienced too. By the way. Thanks to plug forum site. I can share my thoughts regarding software operating systems. thank you... -- Angeles Communications (Phils.), Inc. - Angelcom System Administrator --- 1 Timothy 4:8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: _________________________________________________ Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Mailing List [email protected] (#PLUG @ irc.free.net.ph) Read the Guidelines: http://linux.org.ph/lists Searchable Archives: http://archives.free.net.ph
