It depends on what you're trying to do.  In general, neither mode of
software production is "better" than the other.  Both are arguably
equally profitable given the right business model in the right market.
One treats software as a product, relying on government-enforced
monopolies to maintain that illusion, the other, in general, treats
software as a service.  Both modes have their strengths and their
weaknesses, and by playing to the strengths and finding ways to
compensate for weaknesses in particular markets is how one develops a
successful business model.
