Hi Dean,
I would rather you be heard by our congressmen and it is within your
right and privilege. The thing is the bill was filed in congress, the
chair has no other recourse but to refer that bill to an appropriate
committee. So no matter what we talked and discussed here it will
just be for our consumption in this public mailing list. No amount of
argument in this list will stop that bill from pushing on in congress.
But if you will be attending the public hearing then you could provide
insights of whatever you view as limitation, short comings or flaws
that you want to point out.
I *might* attend the public hearing, and I *might* talk with a
congressman about it. But that shouldn't stop me from airing my
concerns and have people like you, Paolo, Rage, and Roger (among
others) comment on what I think. If you disagree with what I'm saying,
you're free to add your knowledge and opinions to the thread. If you
agree and have something else to say, let me know, it would be very
much appreciated.
I am not out to stop that bill from pushing on in congress by airing
my concerns here, but I am all for free discussion of a topic
evidently important to some people -- or for that matter, some people
really like arguing with me and the points that I've raised.
But if you ask if Linux and FOSS is good for our government, all I can
say is NSA has recommended SELinux, all fortune top 500 runs Linux in
their businesses, China is using Linux, India is using Linux and so
is Hezbollah,Alqaeda, Iran and Iraq. For whatever use and purposes
FOSS have served us all well.
There's no question about how good Linux and FOSS is for government.
I've seen it first hand for the past few years -- I even develop
solutions for the Linux platform, and had been successfully deploying
solutions in that platform. I love Linux and FOSS and what it's done
for me and other people.
However, I believe that's not an excuse to make the use of FOSS mandatory.
And that's all that I've really been saying. Some people seem to
disagree with my stand, and argue with me on the list which is all
good for everybody's information. I learn a lot from Rage, Paolo,
Jeff, and others about how other people see policy making in
government, I believe that's a good thing.
Now if you'll excuse me, I still have to argue some more... ;-)
