OK... now problems are coming in... 1. python /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check chews up all the CPU. I need to kill it to make the system usable. I thought renicing would help but it was already running at nice 19.
2. my X screen went blank. the mouse pointer was still there, still changing from pointer to "hand". screen saver problem? 3. this was already there before I upgraded... for some reason, I keep on loading the old NVidia kernel module, so X does not start.
