I wonder how the others fared, especially on having upstart installed and replacing your sysvinit ;)I downloaded the iso image and did a new install with that.
I still can't see the difference between sysvinit and upstart.
Ubuntu 6.10 with upstart still has /sbin/init, /etc/init.d with all
the init scripts, /etc/rc[0-6S].d with all the soft links to /etc/init.d,
and /etc/event.d/ replacing /etc/inittab. Is upstart just a rearrangement
of directories, or is there a fundamental change?
I am sticking to Ubuntu for my second-hand Dell Inspiron 6000,
since FC6 does not have support for the Intel Pro/Wireless ipw2200
and I am forced to download ipw2200 / ieee80211 / ipwIntelFirmware,
etc. and build from sources, just to get wireless under FC6. That is
too much hassle for me. However, FC6 has immediate support for
software development as a one-click option, while I have to pick each
Debian package, one at a time, and may actually miss one if I am careless. (Questions like: do I need gettext, texinfo, tetex, nasm, etc to
build C/C++ programs? to build the kernel?) FC6 does software
development support automagically. Too bad it has poor ipw2200
support.
With Ubuntu Edgyu Eft (as with 6.06), I also needed to download
and build mkttfontdir, and copy the Microsoft truetype fonts from
/winxp/WINDOWS/Fonts (which is visible under Ubuntu, but not
under FC6), in order to get Microsoft truetype for OpenOffice 2.0.4.
Also Edgy has Firefox 2.0, while FC6 has only 1.5.0.7.
Edgy Eft is looking great in my Dell I6000.
