i read the article and my understanding is that they are only changing the license on the implementation. wasn't the main issue of critics with java is that sun controls what goes into the java standard/specification? doesn't (ibm|blackdown|...) have their own implementation of the java standard, or are they just forks of the sun implementation?

Correction please. The Java Community Process controls the specification. Sun heads most of the JSRs but unlike closed standards, Sun listens to the community.

Apple has its own implementation. Apache will be releasing one as well. Microsoft has one. IBM has one, too.
