If you're burning DVDs from the commandline, have you tried using
growisofs instead? It's supposed to be better and more reliable than
cdrecord for DVD burning.

Anyway, just like Anuerin, I'm using k3b to burn DVDs (which, BTW,
uses growisofs to burn DVDs). No problems burning even with the screen
save activating (well, I only use "Blank Screen" for my screen saver)
or while watching TV (MythTV). Also, my DVD burner is the only one
using the IDE channel it's attached to (master only, no slave) because
all my hard drives are on SATA.
