To desire the freedoms granted by FOSS licenses is NOT an arbitrary
ideological preference.
Ah, yes it is an arbitrary ideological preference. It's a preference
which stems from a certain viewpoint or ideology that is "freedom"
regarding the software in question.
This is your error.
So I'll be wrong in saying that I think the concept of monogamy is
bullsh*t? Well that's an ideological preference which I merit to have
because of the freedoms I enjoy under a democracy, where my Free
Speech had been granted. That doesn't make me right nor wrong, it just
makes my opinion different from yours.
If there is an error here is that you think a debate on "Freedom" will
result in a right or wrong interpretation.
The freedoms brings benefits
that are real, practical, and result in significant economic value. If you
do not recognize this, then YOUR conviction is what is arbitrary and
ideological.
So what if the freedoms bring benefits real, practical, and result in
significant economic value?
Does it make it right for government to mandate by law that only FOSS
will be used in government systems? Not in my book.
Of course my convictions are ideological in nature, and hell yes it's
arbitrary because I came up with my convictions -- I choose what I
want to believe, and I decide when something is not right for me. Now
if you subscribe to the "inherent good" and "inherent truth"
reasoning, then maybe my convictions would be alien to you because I
am for equal opportunity and fair play not necessarily favoring any
"moral indemnifications" some religion/ideology will choose to impose
upon me.
If you think Proprietary Software brings about ills because of the
evils it spawns then go ahead, I'm not stopping you: just don't think
I'll agree that there is inherent "evil" in these software or this
type of licensing.
