I don't want to sound callous, but hand-waving doesn't really help.
Yes, the developers of the different FOSS applications need all the
help they can get -- let's just go ahead and help them instead of
grabbing a soap box and talking to the community. Preaching to the
choir never seems to be effective.

But then, why do these things *just work* in Windows land, but not in
Linux land?

Well, let's see why:

1) The hardware was designed to work with Windows based computers

2) The hardware was designed to work with Windows based computers

and...

3) The hardware was designed to work with Windows based computers

Hardware support is of course a hairy issue -- the open source
community needs the full cooperation of hardware manufacturers to be able to
pull things off.

Hmmm... Yes, and we all need lower gas prices. That doesn't mean we'll get it.
