I don't want to sound callous, but hand-waving doesn't really help. Yes, the developers of the different FOSS applications need all the help they can get -- let's just go ahead and help them instead of grabbing a soap box and talking to the community. Preaching to the choir never seems to be effective.
But then, why do these things *just work* in Windows land, but not in Linux land?

Hardware support is of course a hairy issue -- the open source community needs the full cooperation of hardware manufacturers to be able to pull things off.
