like ice cream we all have our own favorite... ummm... "flavor" of linux... so everyone of us would be giving you a different set of answers, based on our own preferences and experiences.

that said:

a lot of people like ubuntu, some suse, fedora, then there's mandriva, and of course my fave of the lot: gentoo... and many more out there. its part of the beauty of it.

it took me five distros to settle for gentoo. i dunno with others here, if they went through the same. each distro has their own way of doing things. so it may be a different experience for you.
