Well, if it's any consolation, I once recently wrote a set of data
analysis scripts in Perl -- because Java wasn't an option, nor was
Python or any other of the usual suspects. The deployment environment
was an old Sun Solaris box that did have an old JVM (1.1), but I needed
the scripts to process a lot of text, so I decided to go with Perl.
