I normally have much better luck getting speedier results with djbdns.
Unless you have any strong objections against DJB, I highly recommend
that you give djbdns (tinydns for authoritative, dnscache for resolving,
axfrdns to allow secondaries to poll tinydns) a spin. On Debian you can:
# apt-get install daemontools-installer djbdns-installer
Also, for whatever it's worth, dnscache + OpenDNS[1] makes for a
powerful combination, helping improve my overall DNS resolution
performance.

though im used to bind configuration i'll try using dnscache for query and
stick to bind for my domains ... sounds crazy
