yes you can use the free VMWARE. you still need NT licenses though. your plan is not a bad one, you can probably consolidate multiple NT4 boxes onto a single new CentOS box. i highly recommend the Sun Fire X2200 M2 class boxes. These are 64-bit dual-core Opterons. They cost about the same as SuperMicro or Intel server hardware ($8k). Me, I'd rather go for Sun if it costs the same as other hardware.
