what filesystem was this on?  I had possibly similar issues (maintenance
runs with very high IO levels, not necessarily backup, but reading from
very large tables and writing the table out again to another file).

it's ext3. we moved the archive log location to another set of disks
and that reduced
the load. the backup scripts are using 3 channels to do the backup.
