At long last, the latest version of the GNU General Public License (GPL),
version 3, has been finalized and submitted for approval to the Open
Source Initiative (OSI).

This latest version contains new provisions that can protect the FOSS
community in matters related to software patents and the freedom to use
GPL-licensed software on embedded devices. To
help everyone understand the implications of these provisions, and to
provide some background to the matter, Ive collected some links to past
stories and articles published on the Internet, as well as
other important resources. Have at it and learn why GPL v3 should matter
to you.

* Why You Should Care About GPLv3 This FAQ article is the top story
of the Enterprise Open Source Toolkit, a suite of informative
   articles on ZDNet.co.uk.

* FSF Celebrates Release of GPLv3 Here is the announcement of an
important moment for the The Free Software Foundation (FSF). A
related article is GPLv3 Submitted to Open Source Initiative for
approval, which details an important step in getting the community
to support the new version of the most popular and arguably the
   most important open source license.

* New Version of the GPL Is Finalized This story touches on some of
the potentially thorny issues that GPL v3 raises, including
   possible inmplications for Apples iPhone.

* Welcome to GPL v3 Lets not forget the FSFs own website dedicated
to GPL v3! The final text and an FAQ are available here. The text
of a related license, the LGPL can also be found on this site.

* GPLv3 Arrives, But Nobody Seems To Care. Heres a somewhat less
enthusiastic view of GPL v3 and its prospects.

I think its important that as many people as possible know about the
salient points of GPLv3. Hopefully they will realize that this new license
is yet another weapon to defend Free and open source
software against the predatory patent tactics of companies like Microsoft.
Not everyone may agree how effective GPL v3 may be, but I guess time will
tell.
