My project assigned computer is similar, it's the Aspire 5570Z, also had sound issues with DesktopBSD 1.6RC2 (FreeBSD + KDE + desktopbsd-tools). Installed the Open Sound System from http://4front-tech.com/ (4Front Tech), and it worked albeit with some quirks. Might do the trick for you. As an aside, OSS is now incorporated into 1.6RC3 and works without the same hitches as 1.6RC2 + the manual OSS install. -- Daniel O.
