I suspect a FOSS OS install on it won't be as smooth as with a truly supported notebook but you *can* get most of it to work. The main issues might be with the peripherals -- sound (as you might've seen :), network interface circuitry, x-in-one card reader, video. I've tried at least two OSes on this 5570Z: the DesktopBSD 1.6RC3 I'm using now, and BeleniX 0.6.1. BeleniX recognized both my WiFi and my wired LAN but couldn't get a DHCP lease through the former. It didn't recognize my sound either, and I was stuck at 1024x768. DtBSD, OTOH, doesn't see my wired LAN port, and started me up in 1024x768 video. Installing 915resolution took care of the latter, and wired LAN isn't important to me because WiFi works. Sound is OK though. I haven't gotten 5-in-1 to work in either OS, but I haven't really worked at it since I don't need it at the moment. In terms of the hardware: it's one heavy bugger. Also, it heats up *lots* -- I once left my cell phone beside its left side, and when I picked it up, it was noticeably hot, as if it were charging (Nokias do that, don't they?). It's not a bad laptop, and in fact it's pretty good for the price -- PhP49,999 or something like that. Would I buy it if I had the budget for it? Maybe. Let's say I'd shop around. -- Daniel O.
