If your Acer Aspire 5570 is the one sold locally without Windows, then you're in luck. The sound actually works, but it's, uhh, quirky. In alsamixer (or whatever mixer control you're using), the built-in speakers are controlled by the Surround slider. If the Surround slider is muted, the front speakers won't output sound (but anything plugged into the headphone jack will). In fact, plugging anything into the headphone jack will not cause the front speakers to mute. Bah.
