i agree with this one. because most, if not all, recruiters pick resumes
based on search keywords. they'll ignore you even if you have a 5+
years of experience with "GNU/Linux" (various distros) when they're
searching for a "Debian" experience since the search engine didn't
saw a match in your resume. and due to this kind of practice, sometimes
you have to inflate your resume with a lot of keywords in order to
increase your chances of being noticed by those recruiters. for ex,
use the keyword "RHCE" instead of the complete term. better yet,
use both!
recruiters (not necessarily includes the hiring manager) do favor
certified professionals because:
1. they do _believe_ that you have a much _higher_chances_ of
passing the whole interview process or getting hired, and perhaps
that would make their job easier to _screen_you_in_ since you've
already passed a globally-recognized and standardized exam
anyway (they might no longer ask you based on a 3-5 Q&A script).
a higher candidate-to-hired conversion means a lot to them.
2. your resume came out of the search results based on one of the
keywords like "certified", "certification", etc. hehehe
i have this funny experience with a series of recruiters who endorsed
me to the hiring manager even though i've already told them that i'm
a mismatch for a "Embedded C Developer". they told me that my
resume matched the requirements anyway that they want me to move
on to the next stage (even though it's quite obvious that my career
revolves around LAMP). i think the keywords that matched were:
- "Embedded" Linux Group (a team name)
- "C"/C++ Data Structure and Algorithm/Microprocessor Programming
(subjects that i taught 7 years ago!)
- PHP "Developer" (career)
that was the fastest concluded (phone) interview that i've ever encountered
with a hiring manager that started with "there's a misunderstanding..."
hehehe. but that would be a different story if they've managed to arrange
a flight for you :)
