In all laptops I have handled, it usually cycles between LCD, CRT and BOTH. Apparently your BIOS don't cycle to BOTH. You may want to see if there are updates to the BIOS you can flash.
All is not lost, you can tweak your xorg.conf to get a clone configuration. I tried your little test: 1. Reboot. 2. At grub prompt, press ESC. 3. Hit fn+fk. Here, what happens is I see the grub menu being displayed alternately between the my laptop display and the external monitor, but never both on at the same time. My F8 button has the "CRT/LCD" label by the way. Do you think it's a BIOS issue or purely an X server problem? Right now, by the way, what I have are like 2 different desktops. The mouse travels from my laptop screen to the external monitor if I move the mouse pointer to the right hand side of my laptop. The opposite happens when I move the mouse pointer to the left of the external display. It's not so bad, actually because I'll have bigger working space. But I would still like to have the good old "clone" display, especially when I have do presentation before an audience.
