Maybe you're right and it's a BIOS thing.  Anyway, I found a workaround:
nvidia-settings :-)
With nvidia-settings, I could create either a "TwinView" where the two
monitors combine to act as one display/desktop.  Also with it I could also
create two separate displays from the two monitors.  In the latter case,
however, unlike the "TwinView", I can't move windows between the two
monitors.  So, both are not exactly what I wanted but they do offer
advantages over what I really wanted :-)

Also, nvidia-settings sorts of provides the Fn+CRT/LCD functionality as you
can disable any of the monitors you're using.  And in some cases, you don't
even have to restart X.
