Thanks for the responses to my suggestion: - others who were supportive - the complete list is already online - go hp - how do we go about this
Remember that the milieu of my suggestion is computer shops, which are one of the keys for promoting linux, partic. the shop owner, or 'visor, or the ordinary sales person. A customer comes in and asks: this laser printer looks ok, and the price is right for me. will it work with my ubuntu linux? the shop owner can't be expected to go searching the Internet to answer that question. The complete list is a resource for the Linux-advocate, not for them (unless they are actually FOSS advocates). I wonder if there's any shop owner here. But my guess is that the best way to give info the shops will use is to give them a printed list. Anyone asks about Linux. they check the list. If the item is there, then they can show the customer, and then the customer assured and he knows he can run to a group if he has problems. The models actually being sold in the Phils are quite few. Visit the largest shop you know (say, Octagon at Megamall -- one of the biggest I think. I bought my laser printer there. They had 5-6 six brands in the 4-6 thou price range. Only Samsung indicated in their manual Linux compatibility, and the driver in the CD itself didn't work). I did check the openprinting.org site. Its recommended solution was way too complicated. I do remember trying it and giving up halfway to look for a better way. The list I am suggesting should only cover models sold in the Philippines, so it will be smaller and maybe practical to print. Maybe it should cover only hardware PLUG members have actually tried (for further discussion, this). Yes, hp... But the customer wants the Samsung because its cheaper. We still need to answer the question: will it work with Linux? How do we go about this? I suggest that a PLUG volunteer come forward (I know I made the orig suggestion, but I can't be that volunteer sorry) who will take responsibility to move this project forward (have the wiki ready, get needed info from PLUG members, hassle the PLUG directors for some operating funds, form a committee, etc.) My posts are too long, sorry.
