The Intel Core2 Duo with Sony DVD-RW desktops that were assigned to us at the UP Dept of Computer Science, I believe, have the same problems. The DVD does not work as DVD but only as CD. You boot the Fedora8 DVD installer and the thing actually boots, but after booting, the DVD contents can't be read, so F8 can not be installed from DVD. I think it is the PATA/SATA problem that you mention.
The installation problem is actually easy to solve. Just install with F8 installation CDs. You can get these by using Revisor on an already installed F8 system. If you do not have an F8 system, I can burn the F8 install CDs (updated to the most current packages) for you. Five (5) CDs should be sufficient.
