Currently we're using Plone, although it's slower than KTDMS (alfresco haven't tried yet), I customized it to open external application for DOCS,ODT,XLS,PPT documetn formats, directly from the browser using a python/zope script.
FCKEditor product of plone is also handy for web page formats (We're using page format instead of attaching DOCS, ODT). Workflow s also handy with Plone. It has some featured workflows for Intranet and guards / security if well established and defined in plone. Need a little python background is recommended if you wish to tailor it more for your purpose. Also there's a product External Storage which enable attached documents to be saved in the current filesystem instead of the default database (ZOBD). Lastly Plone has a built-in webdav server, so its easy to manage using your Os file manager.
