My previous job we have more freedom to choose our OS, I have HP
desktop on Fedora+VMWare with Ubuntu. My HP Laptop in XP but with
VMWare also in Ubntu.

If its basically a standard desktop spec from HP, Dell and Lenovo, I
believe Linux wont be issue unless you are planning to do something
else like graphic intensive apps.
