I finally managed to build Android from source. When they say from source, they mean it - everything is source! I had a few false starts - looks like stuff in their repo wasn't synced and version numbers didn't match.
The most intriguing stuff are the Google-written open source: the Dalvik Java VM, which has some ARMv5 code (!), and the Skia graphics engine, which is also in Chromium/Chrome. If you're looking for source code for a cellphone, there's none - only the emulator used for the SDK has source.
