Been using linux for servers for years, but only last year switched to linux desktop. I tested both Ubuntu (being the most popular) and Fedora (being the one nearest to Redhat - this was relevant to me due to my involvement in Oracle projects).
Ubuntu - for most desktop applications, it was easy. I got support for viewing different video files easily. For the not so straightforward part (e.g. install skype, configure wifi) i got the solution right away using a few google searches. Only downside - could not install Oracle standard edition - some people claim they were able to do it, but I gave up after a few tries. Was limited to XE. Also still could not get extended desktop to work up to now - though I haven't really thoroughly searched for a solution. Fedora - I gave up trying to get viewing .mov videos to work. A lot of things were not straightforward. Yes, I got to install Oracle SE, but I decided Ubuntu + Oracle XE or Oracle SE on a VM was the best for me. Hope this helps Johann On Wed, Apr 1, 2009 at 3:50 PM, d3am0n <[email protected]> wrote: > > but do you think its less trouble and support ? > On Wed, Apr 1, 2009 at 3:47 PM, Tito Mari Francis Escaño < > [email protected]> wrote: > >> Ubuntu is still the best desktop-oriented Linux distro right now IMHO. >> >> On Wed, Apr 1, 2009 at 3:44 PM, d3am0n <[email protected]> wrote: >> >>> Hi guys ! just want your recommendation regarding , what best destro for >>> desktop ? and user and interface friendly ? >>> >>> >>> thanks guys and more power >>> >>> >>> d3am0n >>> >>> _________________________________________________ >>> Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Mailing List >>> http://lists.linux.org.ph/mailman/listinfo/plug >>> Searchable Archives: http://archives.free.net.ph >>> >> >> >> >> -- >> Tito Mari Francis H.
