Further down on http://www.unix.org/what_is_unix/history_timeline.html

it mentions that 4.4BSD-Lite was specifically released, as 4.4BSD
without the encumbered code from AT&T Unix.

4.4BSD-Lite wouldn't even boot, due to two missing source files, so
Bill and Lynne Jolitz wrote those two files and thus 386BSD was born.
FreeBSD is derived from 386BSD.

if there was no AT&T code in 4.3BSD and friends, then I don't see why
4.4BSD-Lite had to exist.. of course it follows that 386BSD (and thus
FreeBSD) are completely free of AT&T Unix code. But that isn't my
contention. My contention is that BSD Unix _started out_ taking a lot
of code from the (then open) AT&T System 6, System 7, and 32V Unix.
