I read an article somewhere... that it's socialist Western economies
which are most likely to produce these types of contributors.

Notice that even in the Linux kernel, a bulk of the original
contributors were from Scandinavian countries which, even more than
the US, provide for their citizens' needs. So they need not worry
about pedestrian concerns like paying their rent or buying food.

And Ken Thompson etc. all worked for the big bad AT&T which bankrolled
their research. Ditto for Metcalfe the Ethernet inventor and the mouse
inventor, except they were with Xerox. And Tim Berners-Lee at CERN.

It's quite rare to find Free contributors from poorer countries, I
guess because in poorer countries, you need to earn a living.

I think Exist / Devzuz is making some significant contributions to
ActiveMQ / OpenESB / Maven. That's probably the closest we can get in
the Philippines.
