The server kernel has the deadline io scheduler. The desktop has cfq. Desktop + server applications sounds like the better plan unless you are doing high end database development and need the deadline kernel. But in that case a better solution would be to get another platform for the server. Preemption is turned off on the server. That might make typing a bit frustrating sometimes. Doesn't sound like turning it on would be good for the deadline scheduler either.
