Indeed.  One of my first projects on Linux and mplayer/mencoder was
transcoding a DVD stream into an .avi small enough to fit in a 640MB
CD.  Fortunately for me, most of the video stream is dark so the
quality of the resulting video stream was bearable, and at the time I
had only screens of up to 1024x768, so scaling back them seemed
alright.
