isn't .avi just a container? (together with mp4, ogg, matroska, etc.) what codecs can those dvd players from Quiapo play?
H264 and AAC can have very low bitrates and still maintain good quality. I have compressed a two-hour movie using H264+AAC in an MP4 container to a 117MB file. It still has fair quality when seen using a TV screen/ CRT monitor. I guess, it depends on the device you want to play these movies on that would affect your choice.
