Tried that, and suggestions from Joe, Heath and Aaron. The problem is
not yet resolved, but I have different error messages that may be
revealing to someone who knows more about things than I do.

First, evidently the syntax for the display suggestions is (e.g.)

gnome-terminal --display=:0.0

That is, it needs a double dash in front and no spaces between the =
and the argument. Once I gave the commands in that format I stopped
getting "unable to parse" error messages. Unfortunately, the commands
still didn't work, but at least now I know the correct format.

Heath's suggestion needed slight syntax revision also, but after fixing
it to:

export DISPLAY=:0.0

It worked without error messages. However, it doesn't seem to have
solved the problem. That is, right after giving the command I tried
"gnome-terminal" and got "Failed to contact the GConf daemon; exiting."

When I did:

gnome-terminal --display=:0.0

I got the most interesting error message of all:

Failed to get the session bus: dbus-launch failed autolaunch D-BUS
session: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed. Falling back to
non-factory mode. Failed to contact the GConf daemon; exiting.

I'm hoping someone here can translate that.

As for Aaron's suggestion to install gnome-do, I succeeded in
installing it, but can't figure out what to do with it. According to
the man page "the hotkey to summon the gnome-do interface is <super>
+space." Does <super> mean as superuser? Or what?

And to those who suggested right-clicking on the root window, bear in
mind that there are no windows on the display at all, root or
otherwise. It's just a completely blank screen showing my wallpaper. I
did try right-clicking and other clickety things, but nada. The mouse
and keyboard work, but there is nothing to click on and no windows to
type in.

I do have another ordinary user that I created a long time ago for
emergencies. I haven't tried to log in as him, or as root. I'll do that
after I send this.
