Well, you fixed a symptom.

It's *probably* the result of a bigger, more general problem with
gnome-session.  I imagine other things are probably broken that you
don't know about yet.  Backing up your .gnome* directories/files and
reconfiguring gnome is probably a very good idea.

It could also just be an issue with gdm -- the graphical dohicky that
takes your username/password -- but this sounds much more like a
gnome-session issue to me.
