Paul,

   Aha! That's newer than the information in my 2005 Subversion book. Since I
removed the repository and the .svn/ subdirectory in the project directory
before starting over, I'll do the same again, but use the fsfs backend
instead.

   I'll look again at the subversion web site to understand fsfs.
