I used to do Tech Support for HP, and that's not technically true. HP supports the software and hardware on the computer /as shipped/. Thus, they can't provide support for systems with Linux on them, because the troubleshooting tools that they ship with the system (and provide diagnostic codes that they use for setting up service orders) aren't on there, among other things. Thus, they need the customer to do a full system recovery first, to put Windows (and the diagnostic tools) back on. However, this in turn wipes the hard drive. It's not convenient, but it's not done out of total evil either.
As far as adding hardware goes - well, they can't support that, and if the system needs to be sent in for repair, they ask that the added part is removed and the original re-installed before you send it in. This is referring to home desktop computers by the way. I can't speak for the policies of the notebook department or the business desktop departments, because I didn't work in those.
