I would say your theory is pretty good for a large % of that population. I would think most Linux newbies would choose distros that use words in their description such as "user-friendly", "windows-like", etc... It would be interesting to get some stats on the 1st distro people chose and why. I chose Red Hat back in 2001 as it was the only Linux distro I had heard of then.
