Interestingly, i moved to Windows from the Mac (circa System 8 -
mid/late '90's) because i had to use Windows at work and because i got
sick of $helling out big buck$ for Apple hardware and OS upgrades (and i
got sick of my growing closet-ful of orphaned Apple hardware). i'd
always enjoyed Unix at school and work (one of my all-time favorite work
environments was managing a college computing lab that consisted of
Alpha, SPARC, and NeXT workstations, plus early Macs). About four years
ago i got fed up with Windows and started looking at dektop Linux
distros - first Red Hat (employer bought me a license so i could counsel
our clients on conversion-from-Windows issues), then Fedora ('cuz RH was
so stodgy feeling), then OpenSuse, which felt pretty good for a while.
At first blush, Ubuntu (Feisty) felt a little dumbed-down in comparison,
but i kept an install around and eventually switched when the
twice-yearly upgrade process became smoother (and i got a machine with
non-ATI video hardware). Fortunately, my last two employers have let me
have my choice of OS at work, and i currently coexist with Windows and
MacOS users quite happily.

For my uses (programming, digital audio), every OS i've tried has ranged
from mildly annoying to throw-it-out-the-window frustrating, depending
on what i'm trying to do. So far, Ubuntu gives me the best usability and
utility bang for my buck, for about the smae time committment to keep
things humming along as MacOS or MS Win.
