Read the last paragraph first. OpenDNS does a great job of blocking certain web sites when asked to, but hulu is not one of them. Hulu is carrying some hard core material.
It isn't practical under Linux or any other system currently available to filter media for sexually explicit scenes. People say just leave it alone, and I'm sure there are millions of people who want to that simply can't. I'd say I do fairly well, but putting filters on your own computers that are imperfect at best is only so effective. ISPs won't filter for people generally, something I'd like to see change. Hulu is a weird case because you can also watch Benji and practically anything else that is on over the air television. The community protection that used to exist because you had to go to a seedy establishment on the corner which was in plain sight is gone. There is very little risk of being seen as going against community values if you are on the Internet in relative privacy. As far as require credit card verification of people's age to view hard core material. Well, that says that people should pay for it which will encourage the industry behind that material to grow. That could mean more sexual slavery and exploitation world wide. I'm opposed to the notion that something is okay as long as you have to pay for it. Another problem, involving credit cards with "adult" material increases fraud cases as many people are too embarrassed to fight back when a media company specializing in porn places illegal charges. Community is valuable where one could argue that the Internet is elevating private living over community life. A mailing list offers some semblance of community, but just some. I'd say self discipline is part of the what to do answer, but self discipline alone when there is ubiquitous discrete access to hard core sexual material is tough. Self discipline alone on a large scale even won't stop the "Adult entertainment" industry from expanding. Something more is needed. The decency laws need to be updated for broadcast media and like it or not, requiring people to call before they can acquire "adult" materials could help millions. You can't get it without being seen should probably be restored. Why is alcoholism recognized by people, but sexual addiction is not? Part of being an addict is trying to hide your problem from other people where the Internet has made all kinds of addiction easier. I realize there are legitimate concerns about invasion of privacy to address a problem that many people do not recognize as existing. Concerns aside, the statistic that 1 in 2 teenagers frequently watch sexually explicit media is alarming. Addictions tend to persist, so it would be curious to find out how many porn addicts there are that are adults now. What is the best way to address side cases like Hulu that OpenDNS with the decency settings set to high doesn't help with? This is the technical problem that I hope people will discuss. _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
