Using OpenDNS is somewhat pointless if you don't block other resolvers. Ideally, my ISP would only permit access to the OpenDNS servers, but that isn't going to happen anytime soon. So one is stuck running their own firewall and one has to leave that intact, where it can be tempting not to at times. Yes, if you can bypass your firewall or turn it off, it is trivial to use another resolver.
I'm concerned about using a proxy because I have seen sites break and I have fairly slow servers. It will be a while before I can even consider fixing the slow issue. I frankly see OpenDNS as possibly being superior to Dansguardian. When it comes to media though, sites like hulu which show "adult" material are hard to filter out. Some "adult" sites are recognized by OpenDNS and are blocked, but hulu is borderline and it gets allowed. Where there is hulu, there are certainly other sites like it that mix "adult" and family friendly media with a very low barrier to access "adult" material. OpenDNS is community driven and fairly effective, but one can't expect OpenDNS to block sites like hulu. The local store is a good low tech example of this problem of the benign being mixed with the extreme. Magazine racks in convenience stores are notorious. I have some idea of what I want, I just don't see how a proxy fits into the picture. Technological approaches to filtering web content aside, one can't count on filtering alone to limit what is accessed online. This is a social problem that demands a social answer. Decency laws need to be updated somehow and frankly I'd like to see society's attitude about sex and sexual advertisements change. I'm tired of the Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, etcetera ads. Men who really are impotent need a drug, but most men aren't impotent. I don't agree with the notion that a drug can improve sex, but that's another issue entirely. I don't care for the Max birth control ads either, in fact they offend me deeply. Understanding addiction better might help. Finding media that fits my values which isn't meant for kids wouldn't hurt either. It is tough when you want entertainment and it is hard to find any to leave the less appropriate media that is easily accessed alone. I fear that society is decaying morally which will lead to this problem becoming more acute for people. _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
