Everyone who commented offered reasonable and useful insights. We all have
different needs from our systems so it makes sense for a variety of
partitioning schema to be used.

   To close this thread I'll submit what I decided would work well for me:

/dev/sda1       /
/dev/sda2       /boot
/dev/sda3       swap
/dev/sda5       /home
/dev/sda6       /usr
/dev/sda7       /opt
/dev/sda8       /var
/dev/sda9       /tmp

   This will also force me to re-organize all _my_ contents in a more
productive way. With a nominal 500G on the new drive and my current space
occupancy of 138G there's plenty of expansion room. If I should ever need
more space (gak!!) the cost of multi-terabyte drives will probably be <$100.
