Oracle.  I did not try vmware.

I had two problems, at least.  First was that from Linux I got inconsistent
USB communications with the scanner.  I used a pci usb card that solved that
problem.  It is possible that the scanner has poorly implemented usb (1.1
perhaps?)

I have less specific notes on what happened within VB, but as I recall the
scanner would respond in some limited way, but then stop. I do not believe I
ever got even a part of a scan.

The frustrating thing is that I used to run the scanner from a dual-booted
machine running 98/me.  It goes against the grain to chuck a good piece of
equipment because the manufacturer will neither support it nor release the
specs so those in the sane community can support it.  Besides, dedicated
slide scanners are available only at the professional level now (>$1000).
