How old is the battery? I have had a couple of UPS units with similar behavior. When I replaced the battery they behaved normally. If your battery is stressed from irregular voltage it can go bad quicker than expected. Have you tried unplugging the UPS to see how long it will power your system without AC? Does it behave as expected? - Paul
