Replacing the MSI890GXM-G65 motherboard with a Asus M5A88-V mother board solved the kernel booting problem. Don't know whether that particular motherboard had a problem or if this problem is typical of all MSI890GXM-G65 motherboards. I wanted to go with the AMD 890 chipset, but...
However, my older kernel (2.6.27.7) and drivers don't know how to handle the built in graphics nor LAN on the Asus, so I'll have to use a video card and network card until I install a newer kernel. I am guessing that Asus has moved the logical location of the single IDE port as the 2.6.27.7 kernel and Slackware 12.2 installer can't find the CDROM when attempting to install. The BIOS of course can, and loads the installer, but the installer then can't find the CDROM drive. The solution was to use a SATA CDROM / DVD drive. Wayne Wayne E.
