My Dell laptop has an issue with the Intel video chip and the driver; I forget the exact details. However, adding the line, 'append=nomodeset', to the global portion (at the top) of /etc/lilo.conf fixed the problem. Give this a try. Remember to run /sbin/lilo after making any change to the configuration file.
