I don't recall from your earlier messages, but have you compared the
output of `env` in a terminal that behaves properly with the
miss-behaving terminal(s)? (Do you still have a terminal that wraps
properly?)

I've had issues similar to what you describe, but I never found a
solution either.  I do understand your pain though...
