I recommend VLC, which should be in the repositories (look for it in
Synaptic Package Manager). VLC comes with its own codecs. In my
experience, if VLC won't play it, nothing will.

The VOB files are the actual video files. (You can see this because
of the size of the files.) I am going to take a wild guess that the
second movie is contained in:

        VTS_02_0.VOB
        VTS_02_1.VOB
        VTS_02_2.VOB

You can play these by themselves just by opening them in Totem or VLC
or whatever.

I also suspect that your friend botched the video copy, probably by
doing a file copy instead of a video DVD copy. Your DVD would then just
be a data DVD full of files, instead of a playable DVD. I think it's
possible to take the files and make them into a playable DVD, but I've
never done it so I'm not sure how. It's probably easier just to play
the VOB files one at a time.
