I suppose so. It should at least take the disk out of picture, provided you don't mount it. A different distribution would be more likely to confirm or disprove a software issue. Another thing you might try is ssh'ing into the laptop, perhaps running top. When the hangup occurs, check whether the ssh session is still usable.
