Now I learn that it shuts down when the cursor is moved and sometimes is reluctant to start right away. Seems to be hardware. The Toshiba Satellite is a low-end machine that's been in heavy use (average 10 hrs/day) for about 3 years. This makes it reasonable to replace it with a semi-low-end Lenovo.
